What design system drift means

Design system drift is unintended divergence between the system's semantics, design assets, coded components, documentation or product implementations over time.

How drift appears

Figma may include an exception state, code may omit it and one consuming product may fork the status behaviour.

The consequence is not just visual inconsistency: users receive different meaning and teams can no longer predict what an update will change.

When a difference is not drift

Not every difference is drift. A documented, owned product variation may be legitimate.

The design system needs an explicit way to record that distinction.

Ways to trace drift

Run a design system drift trace

The Design System Drift Checker lets a team run that trace themselves.
